Turbo - About Joe - Mala of Merit™

Hi, I'm Joe. I am a retired Navy veteran with 20 years of experience as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician (think special operations bomb squad). While my time in the military presented many challenges, I am proud to say that I have overcome combat-related PTSD through mindfulness and meditation. In 2011, after rescuing 23 people from a minefield, I experienced a life-changing moment when I stepped on a mine myself, losing my left leg below the knee, severing the nerves in my left arm, and shattering my right hand.

This experience taught me the true meaning of the saying that "life is short," and helped me gain valuable insights about the things we commonly overlook and the importance of living in the present moment. While I lost a physical part of myself and gained some mental scars, I am truly grateful for the experience and the growth it has brought me. I hope to inspire and support others on their own journey towards personal growth and well-being.

Meditation

Growing up in a small farm town in the midwest, meditation and mindfulness were not a part of my childhood. It wasn't until I met Mary Lee, who had been practicing for years, that I even considered exploring these practices. At first, I wasn't sure if meditation was for me, but after a year of daily practice using the Waking Up app by Sam Harris, something finally clicked.

I was struck by the paradoxes of meditation and found myself laughing out loud as I explored my own mind and questioned everything I believed. It was a powerful and transformative experience, and I am grateful for the opportunity to continue learning and growing through meditation and mindfulness. I hope to inspire and support others on their own journey towards personal growth and well-being.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness has always come naturally to me, but meditation was a different story. I think it's fair to say that both meditation and mindfulness are misunderstood and misrepresented in American culture, and I was equally guilty of this before I started my own practice.

However, I have come to believe that mindfulness in everyday life is one of the most powerful skills you can learn, no matter where you are on your journey. The ability to let go, observe the present moment, and move on is a skill that can literally change the direction of your life. It's a trait that is often underrated and undervalued in our culture, but I believe it has the power to transform your life in meaningful ways. I am passionate about sharing the benefits of mindfulness and helping others incorporate it into their daily lives.

Hobbies

As a Navy EOD tech, I have spent my adult life jumping out of airplanes, diving around the world, shooting guns, disarming IEDs, and blowing things up. But despite this exciting and demanding career, I have come to realize that my lifelong passion is learning. I love learning new skills, reading new books, and delving into topics like quantum physics and the nature of reality.

I believe that lifelong learning is a crucial part of personal growth and well-being, and I am always eager to engage in conversations that challenge my beliefs and theories and encourage me to keep learning and growing. I find value in intellectual curiosity and the exchange of ideas, and I hope to inspire and support others on their own journey towards self-discovery and personal growth
